Vivotif

Vivotif is an oral typhoid vaccine containing the live, attenuated Salmonella Typhi strain Ty21a. It helps protect against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. This vaccine is taken as capsules for oral use. Suitable for travelers and those in high-risk areas.

Vivotif is used to prevent typhoid fever, a serious bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. It is recommended for travelers visiting regions where typhoid is common, as well as for household contacts of typhoid carriers. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against Salmonella Typhi. It is not used to treat active typhoid infections.

After taking Vivotif, the body’s immune system responds by recognizing the weakened Salmonella Typhi bacteria. This may lead to mild, temporary effects such as stomach discomfort or mild fever. Some people may experience a slight headache or fatigue. These effects are generally short-lived and indicate the vaccine is working.

Store Vivotif in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (35°F and 46°F) to maintain potency. Keep the vaccine in its original packaging until ready to use. Do not freeze or expose to high temperatures. Discard if the packaging is damaged or the capsules appear discolored. Always check the expiration date before use.

Vivotif should not be taken with antibiotics, as they may reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness. Avoid consuming alcohol within 48 hours of vaccination, as it may interfere with the immune response. If you are taking other medications or have a weakened immune system, consult a healthcare provider before use. Live vaccines like Vivotif may interact with certain treatments.
