Йодопол is a radioactive iodine solution used in nuclear medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This EU-manufactured sodium iodide (131I) is administered orally for thyroid assessment and treatment. Short shelf life requires prompt use after receipt.

Sodium iodide (131I) is primarily used in thyroid imaging and therapy. It helps evaluate thyroid function and treat overactive thyroid conditions or thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine is absorbed by thyroid tissue, allowing doctors to assess uptake patterns or deliver targeted radiation. This makes it useful in both diagnostic scans and therapeutic ablation.

After oral administration, sodium iodide (131I) is absorbed and concentrated in the thyroid gland. Patients may notice a metallic taste or mild throat discomfort shortly after taking it. Some individuals report temporary fatigue or nausea, which typically resolves within a few hours. The effects are related to the radioactive properties and thyroid tissue interaction.

This medication should be handled with care due to its radioactivity. Pregnant women and breastfeeding individuals should avoid use unless medically necessary. Patients must follow radiation safety guidelines, including increased fluid intake and frequent urination to reduce radiation exposure. Avoid close contact with others for several days after administration.

Certain medications may interfere with thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine, including thyroid hormones, antithyroid drugs, and iodine-containing supplements. Avoid consuming foods high in iodine, such as seaweed or iodized salt, before the procedure. Alcohol and caffeine do not directly interact but may affect hydration status, which is important for clearance.
