Zolgensma is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disorder affecting muscle control and movement. It replaces the missing or faulty SMN1 gene with a functional copy to improve motor function and survival. This therapy is typically administered to infants and young children diagnosed with SMA. It is not a cure but may significantly alter the disease’s progression.

After administration, Zolgensma works to produce the SMN protein, which supports motor neuron function and muscle control. Patients may experience gradual improvements in muscle strength, motor skills, and respiratory function over time. Live vaccines should not be administered within one month before or after Zolgensma treatment due to potential interference with the immune response.
