Zobactam

Zobactam is an intravenous antibiotic combining piperacillin and tazobactam, used to treat a range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the penicillin class and is prescribed for moderate to severe infections. This combination helps fight bacteria that may be resistant to piperacillin alone.

Zobactam (piperacillin/tazobactam) is commonly used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections. It is also prescribed for pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections. This combination is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

As an antibiotic, Zobactam works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Patients may notice an improvement in symptoms such as fever, pain, or swelling as the infection clears. The medication does not treat viral infections like colds or flu.

Zobactam should be used with caution in patients with a history of penicillin or cephalosporin allergies. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about any kidney issues or conditions that may affect drug metabolism. Always complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve early.

Zobactam may interact with other medications, including blood thinners like warfarin and certain chemotherapy drugs. Combining it with probenecid can increase piperacillin levels. Alcohol use should be avoided during treatment, as it may reduce effectiveness or increase side effects.
