Paricalcitol is primarily used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease. It works by reducing elevated parathyroid hormone levels, which can otherwise weaken bones and affect heart health. The medication is often prescribed when phosphate binders alone are insufficient. It may also be considered for patients not yet on dialysis but with significant parathyroid hormone elevation.

Paricalcitol helps balance calcium and phosphorus in the body, supporting bone health and reducing symptoms like bone pain or muscle weakness. Some patients report improved energy levels and reduced itching. Effects may take several weeks to become noticeable. Regular blood tests are typically required to monitor progress.

Store paricalcitol at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original container with the cap tightly closed. Do not use if the seal is broken or the medication appears discolored. Always check the expiration date before use. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next dose.

Paricalcitol may interact with other vitamin D supplements, calcium-based medications, or phosphate binders. Certain antacids or cholesterol-lowering drugs can also affect absorption. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications, including over-the-counter products and supplements. Grapefruit juice may alter how the body processes paricalcitol.
