Zarzio

Zarzio (Filgrastim) is a prescription biologic used to stimulate white blood cell production in patients undergoing certain treatments. It supports immune function during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. This injectable medication is commonly prescribed for short-term use in clinical settings. Zarzio is a biosimilar to Neupogen.

Zarzio is used to reduce the risk of infection in people with non-myeloid cancers receiving chemotherapy that causes severe neutropenia. It may also be prescribed to help mobilize stem cells for collection before a bone marrow transplant. Patients with severe chronic neutropenia may also receive Zarzio to increase white blood cell counts. It is not used to treat infections that already exist.

Zarzio works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that fights infection. Patients may notice improved energy levels as their immune function recovers. Some individuals report mild bone or muscle pain during treatment, which is typically temporary. Regular monitoring by a healthcare provider is recommended to assess response.

Zarzio should only be handled and administered by trained healthcare professionals in a clinical setting. Patients with a history of sickle cell disease should use caution, as the medication may increase the risk of sickle cell crises. Keep this medication refrigerated and protect it from light until ready for use. Do not shake the vial or syringe.

Zarzio may interact with other drugs that affect bone marrow function, such as chemotherapy or immunosuppressants. Combining it with lithium can enhance its effects, so close monitoring is advised. There are no known major interactions with common medications like pain relievers or antibiotics, but always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
