Xalatan

Xalatan (Latanoprost) is an eye drop used to treat high pressure inside the eye, including conditions like glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This prostaglandin analog helps maintain eye health by reducing fluid buildup. Suitable for adults and some pediatric patients under supervision.

Xalatan is primarily used to lower elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, helping to prevent optic nerve damage. This medication is often prescribed when other treatments are ineffective or unsuitable. It may also be used off-label for other eye pressure-related conditions as directed by a healthcare provider.

Xalatan typically starts lowering eye pressure within a few hours of application, with full effects seen after about two weeks of regular use. Users may notice gradual changes in eye color, including darkening of the iris or eyelid skin, due to increased pigmentation. Some experience mild eye redness, itching, or a sensation of foreign objects, which usually subsides over time.

Store Xalatan in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye, to reduce infection risk. Discard any remaining solution after the expiration date or if the liquid appears discolored or cloudy.

Xalatan has minimal systemic interactions but may be affected by other eye medications, especially those containing thiomersal. Using multiple eye drops should be spaced at least five minutes apart to prevent dilution. While rare, systemic effects are possible if absorbed into the bloodstream, so caution is advised with pre-existing eye conditions or allergies to prostaglandins.
