Varilrix

Varilrix is a live, attenuated varicella vaccine derived from the Oka strain, designed to protect against chickenpox. This vaccine is produced in human diploid cells and is administered via injection. It is a preventive measure for individuals at risk of varicella infection.

Varilrix is used to help prevent chickenpox (varicella) in children and adults who have not had the disease or been previously vaccinated. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus. The vaccine is often recommended for routine childhood immunization and for adults without immunity. It may also be used for post-exposure prophylaxis in certain cases.

After vaccination, the immune system typically responds by producing antibodies to fight future varicella infections. Some individuals may experience mild effects at the injection site, such as redness, swelling, or pain. A low-grade fever or mild rash may also occur, usually within a few days of vaccination.

Store Varilrix refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F) and protect from light. Do not freeze. Before use, inspect the vial for particles or discoloration. Shake well before administration to ensure a uniform suspension. Discard any unused vaccine properly according to local regulations.

Varilrix may interact with immunosuppressive therapies, including corticosteroids or chemotherapy, potentially reducing its effectiveness. Avoid using live vaccines like Varilrix within 1 month before or after receiving blood products or other live vaccines. Consult a healthcare provider if you have recently received immunoglobulin or other antibody-containing products.
