Varilrix

Varilrix is a live, attenuated varicella vaccine derived from the Oka strain, designed to protect against chickenpox. This vaccine is produced in human diploid (MRC-5) cells and is administered via injection. It is a preventive measure for individuals at risk of varicella infection.

Varilrix is used to help prevent chickenpox (varicella) in individuals who have not had the disease or been previously vaccinated. It is commonly recommended for children, adolescents, and adults who are susceptible to varicella infection. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus. It is also used in outbreak control and for individuals at higher risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers or family members of immunocompromised patients.

After vaccination with Varilrix, the immune system recognizes the weakened varicella virus and begins producing antibodies to fight future infections. Most recipients experience mild effects such as soreness at the injection site or a low-grade fever. Some may notice a mild rash resembling chickenpox near the injection site, which is generally not contagious. These effects are typically short-lived and indicate the body’s immune response.

Varilrix should be stored and handled according to vaccine guidelines to maintain its effectiveness. It is important to inform the healthcare provider of any allergies, especially to neomycin or gelatin, as these may affect vaccine suitability. Individuals with weakened immune systems or those who have recently received blood products should consult a healthcare professional before vaccination. Keep the vaccine refrigerated until use.

Varilrix may interact with other vaccines or medications, particularly those that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy. Live vaccines like Varilrix should not be administered simultaneously with certain other live vaccines unless specified by a healthcare provider. It is advisable to avoid close contact with individuals who have severe immune deficiencies for a short period after vaccination.
