This medication is also used to treat osteoporosis in men and to increase bone mass in certain men who are unable to produce normal amounts of testosterone. Alendronate Sodium may also be used to treat Paget's disease of bone, a condition in which the bones are soft and weak and may be deformed, fractured, or broken.

Common effects of Alendronate Sodium may include stomach pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. Some users may experience muscle pain, headache, dizziness, or joint pain. Severe side effects are rare but can include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or new or worsening heartburn.

Alendronate Sodium should be taken with a full glass of water and while in an upright position. It is important to remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication to prevent irritation of the esophagus. Do not lie down or take other medications for at least 30 minutes after taking Alendronate Sodium. This medication should not be taken by individuals who have low calcium levels in their blood or who are unable to sit or stand for at least 30 minutes.

Alendronate Sodium may interact with other medications, including antacids, aspirin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking before starting Alendronate Sodium. Alcohol consumption should be limited while taking this medication, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
